Introduction
John:
Matt, what do you see what you are doing. Let’s say, if you could go into the future about 5 years from now. What would you like to have happen, with all the effort you are putting into traveling to all these cities, meeting all these people, and putting yourself out so everyone gets a chance to personally, see, feel, sense, who you are and what you are about?
Matt speaks:
I believe my goal would be to see Flow Kakou movement centers around the country. During the pandemic, I realized I was working with a couple of different organizations Mental Health of North America, as well as the National Alliance on Mental Illness. And at the moment, all mental health issues, if you have a crisis you are only allowed to talk to someone. There are no other avenues for help.
I realized, there are some of us, we don’t have the words, we don’t have the languaging. Rather, we express through our bodies. So, I am trying to create an avenue for movement and dance to be one of those other resources for our mental illness, or whatever illness we may go through.
So, the hope is, that I would love to see Flow Kakou movement centers, offer a variety of different movements for a variety of different places, but knowing there is a place for those who may not have the words but have the body to express.
John:
So, this can be focused on those who are mobilly impaired or listening impaired, and it’s also for those who aren’t. I took your course, and maybe I don’t have those impairments, but I really got a lot out of your class.
Matt speaks:
One of the things I believe is that dance builds better communicators, and better communicators make better community members. So, through my classes, it really doesn’t bother me if you learn how to dance, if you make dances. What I care most about is that we learn how to communicate better through our bodies and through our intention.
John:
And through that, you can improve the health of individuals by doing this movement.
Matt speaks:
Absolutely. And sometimes health, I believe, falls into 3 categories: physical health, mental health, and emotional health. And when we can balance and juggle those 3, to have them in an equal existence, equal presence. So, that one is not focused on more than the others. Each of the 3 aspects of ourselves is focused equally. I think that’s when we can find a more balanced lifestyle, and a balanced community, and a more balanced country.
John:
I like your mission. I like how you are tying all this together. To make the planet and people healthier: mentally, spiritually and emotionally. And a better place for people to get along with people
