Two Huskies, A Busy Street, And One Simple Decision

Audio

On the evening of September 28 in New Haven, a simple walk home turned into an unexpected rescue mission.

I was carrying bags of groceries back from the store when I noticed two beautiful Siberian huskies wandering near a pizza parlor. At first, I figured they probably belonged to a nearby house and were just hanging around outside. But something made me stop.

The street in front of the parlor was busy—cars were streaming by nonstop—and deep down, I knew that if I ignored this moment, something terrible could happen. So I decided to check.

Earlier that day, my twin brother Scott had told me about something difficult he’d faced. He’d found a rodent caught in a trap and, with no other option, had to end its suffering. It really weighed on him. The contrast wasn’t lost on me—while he had been forced into a heartbreaking situation, here I suddenly had the chance to do something life-affirming.

The huskies were friendly but clearly lost. Thankfully, one of them had a tag with a phone number. I called, and to my relief, the owner answered right away. It turned out they were eating dinner at the diner next door, completely unaware the dogs had slipped out.

I stayed with the huskies on the sidewalk, keeping them safely away from traffic until their family came rushing out. The owner was both relieved and grateful, and the reunion between the dogs and their people was pure joy to watch.

As I walked home afterward, I thought about how close those huskies had come to real danger—and how easily I could have just kept walking. But taking a moment to stop, make a quick call, and wait with them changed everything.

That night reminded me that meaningful moments don’t always come from big plans or dramatic gestures. Sometimes they happen when we simply choose to act. One small, simple decision can make all the difference.
